INITIATIVES

The employment unit engaged in the following broad outreach initiatives in accordance with various elements of FCC Rule 73.2080(c)(2):

Participated in 2 job fairs by station personnel who have substantial responsibility in making hiring decisions.

Only three job fairs were hosted in the area.  We planned to attend all three, but only attended two due to staff illness.

4/12/11 – St. Martin’s University sponsored a Career and Internship Fair at the University in Lacey, WA.  The Fair, co-sponsored by the Evergreen State College, was attended by KGY’s General Sales Manager and Program Director.

5/5/11 – South Puget Sound Community College.  Registered but did not attend due to staff illness.

5/12/11 – Worksource Job Fair at Westfield Capital Mall, KGY’s Program Director participated in the event.

Maintains an ongoing internship program designed to assist members of the community to acquire skills needed for broadcast employment.

KGY has an ongoing internship program.  We recruit applicants from area high schools, technical schools, colleges and universities and job fairs.

This year the response from the local job fairs and schools was poor.  We received one application from the St. Martin’s job fair, but, despite numerous calls, e-mails, etc., it never resulted in an internship.

However, we are pleased to report the three interns from last year completed the program in September 2011.  One of the interns is now employed part-time with KGY in our news department.

Participated in job banks, internet programs, and other programs designed to promote outreach generally (i.e., that are not primarily directed to providing notification of specific job vacancies).

KGY participates in the Washington State Association of Broadcasters Job Bank.  We retain a listing under Sales & Marketing for Sales Executives.

Established training programs designed to enable station personnel to acquire skills that could qualify them for higher level positions.

The strength of KGY is in our employees.  Our training program has been designed to give employees an opportunity to develop their knowledge of the various roles played by staff members and to develop skills in more than one area of radio broadcasting.  On-air Announcers receive training in radio sales and partner with sales professionals to learn the craft. In turn, Sales Executives learn to voice radio ads. Cross-training gives station staff a better understanding of how their roles interact enabling them to provide the best service and support to our clients and our listeners.  In addition, announcers’ monthly meetings include mini-seminars focusing on strengthening their on-air skills.  This program has made it possible for staff to be strong candidates for promotion and/or a higher level of responsibility.

Established a mentoring program for station personnel.

Currently, three KGY staff members are participating in a mentoring/improvement program.  Those employees are: Brad Frederickson, Sarah Huffer and Nat George.

The mentoring program is open to all station personnel.  Individual plans are developed for each participating staff member.  The mentoring program makes it possible for announcers to make a smooth transition from a night shift to day shift or from AM to FM or vice versa.  Sales Executives take advantage of the program to set them up to be successful in the high pressure world of outside commission sales. Program Managers are also able to work with Executive level management.
