“Soundcheck”

Soundcheck is a program that exposes our listeners to a wide variety of local talent and musical genres.  The artists talk about their journey to where they are today and play some cuts of their music. During the 3rd quarter we have featured a number of types of Rock music including:  Country, Folk, Modern, and New Wave. Also featured were some Greatest Hits, Funk, Soul and Heavy Metal.

Military Appreciation Day

Lakewood Towne Centre, in partnership with 96.9 The Sound, dedicated a special day to honoring our military for all they sacrifice for their country.  Kevin Huffer broadcast live from the event.  Military personnel and their families enjoyed the live music, children’s’ events, giveaways, and discounts by Towne Centre merchants. Kevin conducted live interviews with the military and their families.  Also included was a Bar-B-Q for the Firefighters “Fill the Boot” charity.  The Sound managed the funds for this drive.

SafePlace Update

SafePlace Executive Director Mary Pontarolo told our listeners that SafePlace has been providing service to sexual and domestic violence survivors in our community for 30 years.  Their work has been recognized by several awards the past year: Non-Profit of the Year from Economic Development Council, The Best Non-Profit from the Weekly Volcano Newspaper, 2010 Spirit of Advocacy Award from the National Network to End Domestic Violence.  Also, their Youth Coordinator received the Individual of the Year Award from the Thurston Community Action Network for her work in preventing child abuse. Pontarolo reminded listeners of the services provided by SafePlace and ways they can help.

Stuff the Bus

Kevin Huffer interviewed Johnny Listener about this summer’s Stuff the Bus event in Tumwater. School district employees organized Stuff the Bus as a way to give back to the community families and organizations that serve them.  They collect school supplies, food, hygiene and cleaning supplies, new and gently used children’s books. Cash donations are also being accepted.  The items collect will be distributed through:  YWCA The Other Bank, South Sound Reading Foundation and Thurston County Food Bank.

Back to School Safety

Thurston County Sheriff John Snaza spoke with Kevin Huffer about Back to School Safety.  Snaza emphasized that creating a safe place where children can learn and grow depends on a partnership among students, parents, teachers and other community institutions.  Snaza highlighted things that students, parents and school staff can do to keep our children safe and prevent the tragedies that have taken place in Colorado, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.  Listeners were told that detailed information is available on the website.

YWCA

The Sound welcomed new Women’s Resource Center Director Bree Lafreniere.  She shared her ideas on how she can contribute to the mission of the YWCA.  Lafreniere has a strong background in working with refugee and immigrant populations in both Olympia and Tacoma. She also served as executive director for a breast cancer resource center.  Lafreniere updated listeners on the services the YWMA provides to women and families in our local communities.  She provided information on how those in need can obtain services.  Listeners were also told how they can help.

Pet of the Week

Each Thursday a Thurston County Animal Services volunteer brings in a “pet of the week” in an effort to find it a “forever home” and also to let listeners know about other pets that are available for adoption. Paws for the Cause

For the 3rd year, Hawks Prairie Veterinary Hospital, organized one of the largest fundraisers in the community to benefit 12 local non-profit animal organizations. Not only were listeners able to contribute to the cause, they also were able to visit many educational booths to learn what resources are available that provide various animal rescue and educational services.  Participants also enjoyed a pet fashion show and talent show, pet portraits, kids’ activities and live entertainment.
