Allen Miller and Paul Knox educated our listeners about this annual United Way event that offers an opportunity for people to work together to better the lives of local people. This year over 400 volunteers will be working on 35 projects throughout Thurston County.  Local business’ form teams that work on projects for local non-profits.   Throughout the day, selected teams will report in to KGY on their progress.  Details were provided on how listeners can step up next year and volunteer to be a part of this project.

Books by the Bay

Jennifer Williamson Forster invited listeners to the South Sound Reading Foundation “Books by the Bay” 10-year anniversary fundraiser.  In an effort to increase the number of children entering school prepared to learn, read and succeed, The Foundation is dedicated to ensure every child is read with 20 minutes a day. Participants in this event will have an opportunity to meet five award-winning children’s book authors.  There will also be live music, refreshments, and a silent auction. Contact information was provided.

One Book – One Community Reading Program

As part of it’s “One Book – One Community” program, Tim Mallory and Leanne Ingle from Timberland Library let listeners know about the program and the upcoming events.  Everyone in the five-county library district is invited to read or listen to the book, which for this event is, “The Art of Racing in the Rain” and to join other in their communities throughout October for book discussions with the author.  Over 50 free events are scheduled as part of this program. Information on how to obtain the schedule of events was also provided.

2011 Election Candidates

Before each election, KGY Radio, Inc. makes opportunities available for political candidates in contested elections to appear on The Morning Show with Smilin Jay.  This is not a political platform for them or any sort of political donation.  Smilin Jay asks them questions designed to give our listeners an opportunity to get to know each candidate in hopes it will enable them to make better-informed decisions when they vote.  This quarter we featured candidates running in the Primary Election on August 16, 2011, and the General Election scheduled for November 8, 2011. Olympia Mayoral Candidate Forum

Forum moderator Clydia Cuykendall encouraged listeners to participate in the upcoming Mayoral Candidate Forum to be held at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts. Paws for the Cause

Sponsored by the Hawks Prairie Veterinary Hospital, this 3rd annual event is one of the largest fundraisers in the community for 12 local non-profit animal organizations. In addition to raising money for these organizations, there will be educational booths for pet owners to learn what resources are available t provide various animal rescue and educational services.  Participant can also enjoy  a pet fashion show and talent show, pet portraits, kids activities and live entertainment.

Squaxin Island Tribe Museum Native Art Auction and Traditional Dinner

Squaxin Tourism Director Leslie Johnson described this event and how it offers a chance to learn about the Native American culture.  The Museum itself it a work of Native American art.  The auction benefits the Museum, and the Library and Research Center.  Johnson shared highlights of this unique event designed not only as a fundraiser, but also as an educational opportunity for the community.

Emergency Preparedness Month

Thurston County Emergency Management Coordinator Vivian Eason announced that the Thurston County Commissioners have declared September to be National Preparedness Month.  Eason shared the details of several local preparedness events that will take place throughout the month.  She also gave “Mark your calendar” details about the Annual Emergency Preparedness Expo in October.  Listeners were encouraged to get an emergency supply kit, make a plan, and be informed about what emergencies can happen in our area.

Help Identify the Seven Wonders of Thurston County

Thurston County Commissioner Sandra Romero announced her campaign to get local residents to identify the “Seven Wonders of Thurston County”. The goal is to boost tourism and to remind local residents that some of the best places to visit are in their own backyards.  Residents can nominate anything that they appreciate about Thurston County and its local cities.  The list will be posted on the Thurston County web sit on September 30th.  People can nominate year-round and the list will be updated periodically.

YWCA

New Women’s Resource Center Director Bree Lafreniere was excited to share her thoughts on how she can contribute to the mission of the YWCA.  She has experience working with refugee and immigrant populations in both Olympia and Tacoma, and has served as an executive director for a breast cancer resource center.  The YWCA provides a multitude of service to women and families in our local communities.  Lafreniere listed some of the services provided and how those in need can obtain services.  Listeners were also told how they can help.

Toastmasters International

Smilin Jay was joined by Daryl Murrow who talked about one of many people’s biggest fear—public speaking.  Daryl is a member of Toastmasters International and informed our audience about how Toastmasters can improve communication skills.  Communication is a vital part of nearly everything we do every day.  Being comfortable with public speaking increases your confidence level.  For nearly a century, Toastmasters International has been helping women and men of every background, education level and economic standing develop the competence they need to become effective communicators and inspired leaders.  It also improves communication among family and friends. There are many chapters of Toastmasters that meet in many locations and at a wide variety of times.  Murrow told our listeners how to find out more.

The Arts

Mid Day Show Guest

Capital Playhouse

Stephanie Nace from Capital Playhouse joined mid day host Tom Trotzer to tell our listeners about the production, “Always . . . Patsy Cline” coming up at the Playhouse.  Capital Playhouse celebrated their 25th Anniversary in 2011.  The Playhouse is a non-profit arts education and musical theater performance group. Joining Nace was Kittra Coomer the star of the production.  Nace also mentioned the largest program, KIDS AT PLAY.   Over 300 students between the ages of 8 to 16 participate.
